How to achieve successful fittings with ACUVUE® Multifocal Contact Lenses
Finding a multifocal contact lens that provides consistent success across patients—no matter their age or refraction—can be a challenge. Kurt Moody, OD, FAAO, FBCLA, and Director of Professional Education at Johnson & Johnson Vision and Brad Giedd, OD, unlock valuable insights into successful contact lens fittings. You’ll ensure patient comfort and crisp vision with ACUVUE® Multifocal Contact Lenses while reducing the risks of current contact lens wearers dropping out during presbyopic years due to dryness, discomfort, and poor vision.
3 innovative technologies that set ACUVUE® Contact Lenses apart
ACUVUE® Multifocal Contact Lenses are designed to deliver maximum comfort combined with an extended depth of focus for crisp, clear vision near, far, or in-between. While most manufacturers optimize optical profile by age, Johnson & Johnson Vision understands pupil size changes, not only by age but by the natural pupil variation that occurs across the refractive error range. It is the only technology that uniquely customizes the optical design to the pupil size, delivering parameter optimization at 100% vs. less than 2% for the leading competitor1.
Crisp, Clear Vision
ACUVUE® PUPIL OPTIMIZED DESIGN addresses 100% of parameters tailored to pupil size variations across age and refraction variables.
Precise Fit
Hybrid back curve has an aspheric center that helps to maintain the sophisticated optics as the contact lens wraps to the shape of the eye and a spherical periphery to help keep optics in the right place.
Ultimate Comfort
The brand family of ACUVUE® OASYS has never been beaten in comfort in 25 clinical studies.
3 easy steps to successful ACUVUE® Multifocal Contact Lens fittings
Pupil-optimized design combined with a hybrid back curve help ensure the optimized optics stay centered over the pupil. Infused with a proprietary wetting agent for exceptional all-day comfort, ACUVUE® Multifocal Contact Lenses are engineered for consistent performance and comfort regardless of age or refractive error. Follow the fitting protocol below to ensure clear vision and optimal comfort in three easy steps.
Step 1: Subjective Refraction
- Perform a fresh spherical refraction in ambient light.
- Conduct a red-green duochrome test to refine the spherical endpoint and make sure you don’t add too much minus power.
- Conduct the test monocularly and then binocularly.
Step 2: Determine Ocular Dominance
- Use a sensory dominance test—not sighting dominance—to optimize binocular summation.
- Avoid adding positive power to the dominant eye.
Step 3: Determine Functional Add
- Inquire what working distance is specific to your patient and physically measure it. Since many patients now work predominantly on computers or digital devices, this distance most likely will be further than the 16-inch distance from years ago.
- Based on this working distance, measure the minimum add the patient needs to comfortably see at this distance. This distance becomes the functional add.
Increase efficiency with the ACUVUE® Multifocal Fitting Calculator
Now you’re ready to select the best set of contact lenses using the paper fit guide, or better yet, the digital fit guide with the ACUVUE® Fitting Calculator. This digital fit guide will allow you to avoid some of the common pitfalls, such as forgetting to apply the vertex correction or determining the spherical equivalent.
To make optimal use of the ACUVUE® Fitting Calculator, conduct steps 1 through 3 above. After you determine the appropriate functional add and the dominant eye via the +1.00D ocular dominance method, then input this data—including the sphere, cylinder, axis, age, and dominant eye—into the Calculator and select the “Calculate” button. The result will also make suggestions if you need to optimize either distance or near vision.
Helpful tips to ensure successful ACUVUE® Multifocal Contact Lens fittings
Tune into the Q&A to hear Dr. Giedd’s top tips for successful fittings gleaned from his extensive clinical experience, including:
- Fit 20 patients and track results to measure your success rate and build your comfort in fitting contact lenses.
- Set patient expectations and let them know that meeting their goals 90-95% of the time is considered to be successful.
- Delegate, establish the fundamentals needed to get the right contact lens on the eye the first time, and use your staff to enhance your patients’ experiences in your office.
