Mason, OH, January 18, 2018 – Luxottica and OneSight jointly announce the optometric students who will participate this May in two OneSight clinics to Mexico. Trips are scheduled from May 5-12 and May 19-26 to Oaxaca and Puebla, respectively.
Students completed an online application and essays for consideration. The American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) and the National Optometric Student Association (NOSA) members were chosen using a variety of criteria. OneSight students represent 22 optometry schools across multiple graduation years.
OneSight is a leading organization focused on bringing both sustainable and urgent vision care solutions to communities around the world. To date, OneSight has helped sixteen million people in 46 countries see clearly. By 2020, OneSight will provide ongoing access to vision care to over 20 million people.
Each year, OneSight volunteers travel to remote parts of the globe to provide care and services to populations that lack access to eye care primarily due to high medical costs, travel and/or availability. For a second year Luxottica and OneSight have provided students the opportunity to participate in a clinic.
On the OneSight trip, OD students will work under the supervision of Luxottica Retail affiliated doctors performing comprehensive eye exams. They will also help support a core team of Luxottica volunteers in the frame fitting, manufacturing and dispensing of new eyewear. For the optometry students selected, Luxottica Retail covers all expenses associated with the clinic, including air fare, accommodations and meals.
“The clinical aspect of a OneSight trip will be unparalleled to anything students may have experienced in the past,” says Dr. Ben Chudner, Luxottica Eye Care’s Senior Clinical Director. OneSight organizers predict students will see more patients over the clinic week than they might during a year’s rotation.
“The large number of patients students will see and treat will showcase the enormity of the world vision crisis and show them the role they can play in helping eliminate it,” says Chudner who will be traveling to Mexico with students in May.
